Winkler is located on the Emerado beach formed by the prehistoric glacial Lake Agassiz. The area’s rich soils are divided between the coarser textured loamy sand to the west and the clays further east. The area is suitable for irrigation and primarily produces potatoes, corn and beans as well as canola, and cereals. The climate is continental; dry, cold winters and hot, often dry, summers. The frost free period is 125 days and the area receives an average annual precipitation of 416 mm.
